Before the Tudors, before William the Conqueror, before Alfred the Great... there was Penda, one of the greatest warrior-kings in Anglo-Saxon history and creator of Mercia, one of the seven warring kingdoms that eventually united to become England. But Penda's Britain--over thirteen hundred years ago--seethed with violent struggles between rival warrior-kings who ruled by bloody sword and sealed alliances with forced marriages; this was also when Christianity was just beginning to sweep the land as most still practiced Anglo-Saxon paganism. Told from the perspective of his wife Cynewise, "The Last Great Pagan Queen" is a richly imagined and gritty tale of her marriage to a man who would become known for killing more kings than any other of his age; it is also the story of a woman just trying to make it in a savage world, where--much like today--choices were limited, men held all the power, and it took courage to survive. Note this book contains explicit violence and adult themes.

Almost a 5 star. I loved how it took me back into the time period. It is difficult to write a book without the flashy sword and sorcery stuff and still keep it interesting. The author defiantly does that here. I will say that I am a history buff. There is a lot of "a day in the life" in this book. I appreciate and enjoy that, it helps me become immersed in the world. Others may find it mundane.I liked the main character. I understand that being an un favored wife would make her angry no matter the time period. That is just human nature. She at least tried to figure out how to make the situation better for herself.
The reason this is not a 5 star for me is the ending. The book does not come to a conclusion. It just stops and says to find out what happens next, buy the next book. When I buy a book, I expect it to be self contained story.
I feel cheated when I have to spend more money to find out the ending.

The Last Great Pagan Queen Book One Hædfeld edition by Jayne Stone Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
it was ok
Loved this story. Love fictional history, because of books like this. I really enjoyed this book. Now I'm gonna read book two.
Wonderful historical fiction. Foreign Gods, customs that are unheard of today, but practiced by people with hearts and souls, dreams and loves, just like we have!
I gave up on this book halfway through. I love stories of this genre, but this one annoyed me with its main theme being how much the queen hated her rival Nessa. It was a constant thing in every chapter and got very tedious.
Took a while to get into into it - but I enjoyed it all the same - looking forward to the second installment !
I really do not like this book. My reasons parrot some of the comments by other reviewers. For one thing, I do not like the protagonist, Cynewise, who is a whiner. First, she is unwilling to accept her husband's hand-fasted wife, insults her regularly, dislikes her child, and resents the husband's attention to her rival. I know, I know, wouldn't we all? However, Cynewise lives in a time when women were property and had no rights. She would have seemed more queenly to have simply accepted the situation, especially as her husband did give her respect as queen. Next, she whines constantly that she has not easily become pregnant. Then when she does, she whines constantly about the discomforts of pregnancy. I charge any of you out there who have borne children to remember if you behaved so poorly when you were pregnant. I also do not like the pace of the plot. I keep waiting, waiting for something to happen. But no; it's always the same thing Men away at war; men at home eating, drinking, "coupling;" men conspiring to get revenge or another "king's" land; Cynewise managing the household; Cynewise, her husband, and the household celebrating pagan rites. The only good thing about the book is that it does give an interesting insight into the culture of pre-Christian Britons. I dislike it so much that I will not continue reading it, and I am hesitant to get another book by this author even though I am interested in reading about the other queens of this period that she has written about. Will they be equally whiny?
This book educated me about the time when many kings ruled the many kingdoms of England. Their social customs and religious observances were quite primitive, The plot was interesting, and the characters were developed pretty well. This Queen was indeed a pagan, and fought against the new Christian religion beginning to emerge in her homeland. Women had unusually hard lives, birthing babies, joining the battles, keeping the castles at the ready, and being considered of no importance except for presenting an heir or making a political marriage. It was not a good time for women.
