Fifty years ago, beneath the gleaming structures of the World’s Fair, New York is a city in decay. A beautiful pioneering journalist is assigned to cover the city’s response to the crisis in one of the most pivotal elections in its history. As 1965 beckons, two candidates are poised to do battle the long-serving Democratic incumbent mayor, and the handsome young congressman running as a fusion candidate. The latter is an erstwhile Republican, whose party has calculated that the only way to survive the previous year’s Goldwater debacle is to pivot far to the left of the political spectrum. The campaign is upended by a crippling newspaper strike…and the emergence of a brilliant contrarian, who believes the way forward is not to the left, but sharply to the right, as he strives to give birth to modern conservatism.

The Nation's Hope Kenneth T. Zemsky 9781530268269 Books Reviews

This book by Kenneth Zemsky is a must read especially for this season. If you think his first book was great, then definitely check this out.
A real page-turner. I grew up in the area and was familiar with all of the characters, but I was too young to have followed these events. Was nice to pick up the history in such an enjoyable way.

Looking forward to the next one from this author - he is a great storyteller!
As someone who lived it, and reported on the city during that era for the Herald Tribune, NYTimes & NYPost, I found "The Nation's Hope" a good read. Bravo to Ken Zemsky for this time capsule of a book.
Very enjoyable and easy read. Love the author's ability yet again to weave an interesting story in with real life events. An excellent read.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Zemsky's previous book "Knight to King 4" and looked forward to reading his latest effort. I was not disappointed. Perhaps the combination of its coinciding with our current election season and recalling my own burgeoning interest in politics dating back to that era growing up in NYC added to my enthusiasm, but the portrayal of the period, players and issues is spot on. The strategies of the campaigns and the insight into the personalities of the candidates and the journalists covering them, principally Nancy Dickerson, are handled with intelligence and wit. An engaging and informative read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though I was only eight years old in 1965 I remember clearly my Dad talking about the mayoral race in NYC. Mr. Zemsky's book is enjoyable to read and there were times I could not put it down. A great read to think back of a day when NYC struggled quite a bit/
If you love politics, nostalgia, William Buckley or Nancy Dickerson, this is a must read! The Nation’s Hope is so well written, I finished it in two seatings. Although it is a work of historical fiction, I learned a lot from the novel. More importantly, it was highly entertaining. The glimpses of mid-60’s life brought back many fond memories, and if you are a political junkie, this was fantastic. There are two protagonists, the sixties TV correspondent Nancy Dickerson, who really came alive for me, and for whom I gained a deeper appreciation for her role as one of the first female network correspondents. The other star of the book is William F. Buckley, Jr., who ran as a minor party candidate for the mayoralty of New York City in 1965, which is the setting for the book. The author did a masterful job demonstrating Buckley’s significance to the rise of the modern conservative movement, as well as capturing the charm that Buckley exuded. This book gets five stars, hands down.
