It’s strange how something as simple as a knock on the door can change your life completely – and not necessarily for the better. Kate Carpenter has had a busy year, what with moving in with her boyfriend, Cam, dealing with visits from ex-boyfriends – not to mention job stress, as she keeps finding dead bodies all over the theatre she manages.
And then comes the knock on her door and a visit from Cam’s cousin, just escaped from an abusive marriage with nowhere else to turn. As Kate and Cam get nowhere trying to navigate Carrie through the frustrating bureaucracy of lawyers and police, they finally decide to take matters into their own hands. Tragedy strikes as a gun turns up and a policeman goes down and, although the police arrest someone, Kate just doesn’t think things add up and is determined to get to the truth.
Although her motives are entirely altruistic, Kate finds herself being hassled by the police and threatened by the most dangerous creature of all a mother. Something that Kate finds even more difficult to deal with as she struggles with a personal tragedy of her own.

I really enjoyed this book, I think it's my favorite of all of the Kate Carpenter books. However, I really do not like Kate Carpenter as a character! She's bitchy and unnecessarily snarky and sarcastic with people who don't deserve it and it really gets tiring. Otherwise it's a great story.Product details

This book is short enough for a cold and rainy nigth. I love that Kate is a real person. She needs to get herself a guy and keep him. I don't like to guess ending and this didn't let me down.
I have had the immense pleasure of reading an advanced copy of the third in the Kate Carpenter mystery series, Sins of the Mother. Granted, I wondered how many more dead bodies this poor woman must deal with before friends and family out and out abandon her, as well as whether the believability of the stories can stay intact. After all, I live in Calgary where the books are set, and despite our size and growth, don't think we have this many murders to deal with normally!!
I found Sins of the Mother to be a definate twist from the first two in the series, really fleshing out already favorite characters, and throwing them in a decidedly real situation many people face day to day. A long-lost cousin of Cam's arrives on their doorstep at the end of Evening the Score, setting the stage, if you will, for Sins of the Mother. Scared, broke and leaving an abusive relationship, Cam's cousin finds support from the ever stalwart Cam and introduces Kate to the idiosyncrasies of "domestic bliss". Thinking all is returning to some semblance of normalcy, Kate finds that life has nothing but chaos in store for her, once again thrusting her in the middle of a situation she should know better by now to stay out of. But our heroine is as stubborn and aggravatingly snoopy as ever, thinking she, and only she, knows the way to solve everyone's problems, all the while successfully avoiding dealing with her own.
Sins of the Mother ends on a decidedly somber note, but at the same time a totally believable and realistic one, given the events that have happened. I found myself wanting to reach into the pages and hug Kate and Cam and help them work through things, but I guess I'll have to eagerly await the fourth in the series to find out what has happened to two charactors that I now count as close friends.
Good Book. Easy to read. it was interesting. I like the relationships in the book. I like the fact that she is a little quirky.
Great series! Would love to read more...hopefully there will be a 4th book! This book not only captured a murder mystery but a love story as well.
I don't think I'll buy another one. The main character is far too argumentative and treats her boyfriend badly. But really like the setting in the theater building.
