With Christmas out of the way, the sisters are ready to reopen the bed and breakfast, but it seems as if guests are few and far between in cold and wet January.
Joan and Janet are happy to welcome a young couple for a weekend stay, although Janet has mixed emotions about their other visitor, Margaret Burns, an older woman sent to Doveby House by the mysterious Edward Bennett.
A series of break-ins around the village of Doveby Dale worries all of the small business owners in the area, including the sisters and their friend William Chalmers. When the burglar strikes at one of the homes right across the street from Doveby House, Janet and Joan are even more concerned.
Can the sisters help their local constable, Robert Parsons, find out who has been breaking and entering? Is it possible the young couple staying at Doveby House is involved? And can Janet resist asking Margaret Burns far too many nosy questions?

Love the main characters. Sisters seems to have such a close relationship. The are similar but independent and view their circumstances and people they meet differently. I have read all books in this series and enjoy each one. The locations, information on local happenings and dealing with mysteries is all very enjoyable.Keep up the good work Diana.

Robberies break ins only cash taken but who is behind it one of the guest or someone new in town
I like this series because of the spinster sister's with their B & B who always are observing clues for cases.
I love the Markham sisters, almost as much as I love Aunt Bessie.......I eagerly await each new book, and hope for many, many more. The story was interesting, the bed and breakfast setting was homey and comforting, esp. with all the baking being done. Highly recommend for lovers of a simple, cozy mystery.
Sorry to say more of the same. Think I've had enough tea and puddings to last me awhile. Too . Much repetition. I'll read The Hampton Case and then. I'm done with these ladies. One BOOK is pretty much the same as the others except for as different villain.
From the reviews I must be the only person not taken with this series. Lots of talk, very little mystery. The characters are simplistic, the plot very weak and nothing happens. All problems, that aren't very noteworthy anyway, are solved. Big sister bosses, younger sister rolls her eyes and sneaks off to read. Ho hum.
I think that this is my favorite of this series. Ms. Xarissa hovers near the top of my favorite modern authors list, so that is not a surprise.
The story is fun. The characters were unique. The dastardly villain--or villainess,no spoilers--is who I hoped it would be.
If you want to forget your troubles for a little while, you really can't go wrong with this book.
The sisters with the B&B are back. Again there is lots of baking, arranging the library, and welcoming of guests. A mystery emerges, and later on, so does its solution. I probably wouldn't want a study diet of this level of gentlness, but it is very enjoyable now and then. I loved this book and I love the whole series. Unfortunately now I have to wait for Ms Xarissa to write me another l)
